TotalInvoice

Stop guessing at customs paperwork.

TotalInvoice generates accurate, branded commercial invoices automatically for every Shopify order — with the correct HS code for each destination country, not just one generic code for the whole world.

Every international order needs a commercial invoice. Most stores generate one the same way: a single HS code per product, applied to every country they ship to. It’s fast, and it’s wrong more often than most merchants realise — the right customs code for a product shipped to the US isn’t always the right one for the same product shipped to the EU or Canada. The result is customs delays, surprise duty charges, and orders held at the border while someone tries to work out what went wrong.

TotalInvoice plugs straight into a Shopify store and generates a complete commercial invoice the moment an order is placed — automatically, with no manual work. When a merchant has configured destination-specific HS codes in Shopify, it uses them. When something’s missing, it flags it, instead of quietly shipping a generic code and hoping for the best.

Material composition is another common gap. Most commercial invoice apps have no dedicated field for it at all, so merchants end up repurposing something unrelated — a barcode field, for example — just to get composition onto the invoice. TotalInvoice reads composition from a real product metafield instead: point it at one you already use, or we’ll show you exactly how to set one up in a couple of minutes.

Shipping to the US brings extra requirements most merchants have never heard of — until a shipment gets held at the border because of them. Textile and apparel goods need a Manufacturer Identification Code (MID) on formal customs entries, built from the manufacturer’s name, address and country following US Customs’ own construction rules. TotalInvoice generates it automatically from your product’s manufacturer details, whenever one’s needed — no manual lookup, no guesswork. And if you’re shipping DDP and you’re the Importer of Record, TotalInvoice also prints your EIN or CBP-assigned CAIN on the invoice — another detail that’s easy to miss and expensive to get wrong.

Two more things a formal US entry gets checked against: the manufacturer’s actual name and address, and the product’s country of origin. A MID code is a lookup key for customs’ own systems — it isn’t a substitute for stating the manufacturer in full, so TotalInvoice prints both, from the same product data. Country of origin needs no extra setup at all: it’s read straight from the native field you already set per product in Shopify’s own Inventory settings — the same one Shopify’s own duty estimates use — so if you’ve filled that in, TotalInvoice already has it.

Splitting commercial invoices across fulfilment locations is another problem that’s always had to be solved by hand. Companies shipping overseas from more than one warehouse or 3PL need a separate, correctly itemised commercial invoice for each location — showing only what that location is actually dispatching, not the whole order — and building those manually for every split shipment is slow and easy to get wrong. TotalInvoice Pro does this automatically: one tailored invoice per fulfilment location, generated the moment Shopify assigns the order or when the order is marked as paid, with no manual work.

What it does

  • Generated automatically, every order. No more building invoices by hand or chasing a spreadsheet template.
  • Destination-aware, not one-size-fits-all. The right HS code for the right country, every time it’s available.
  • Builds US Manufacturer ID Codes automatically. The MID a formal US customs entry requires for textile and apparel goods — built from your product’s manufacturer details, no manual lookup.
  • Prints the manufacturer’s name and address too. Required alongside the MID on formal US entries — the code isn’t a substitute for the manufacturer’s actual details.
  • Prints your EIN or CAIN when it matters. For DDP shipments where you’re the Importer of Record, your US Customs identifier goes straight on the invoice.
  • Reads country of origin straight from Shopify. Uses the native field you’ve already filled in for Shopify’s own duty calculations — nothing extra to set up.
  • Looks like it came from you. Your logo, your signature, your VAT/EORI details, your choice of font — not a generic template.
  • Sends itself, or doesn’t — your call. Auto-email customers on generation, or review and send manually.
  • Lives where you already work. Print, preview, or re-send any invoice directly from the order page in Shopify Admin.
  • Built for multi-warehouse operations. Automatically split dispatch invoices by fulfilment location, so each warehouse only sees its own items.
